788CI HD - Powering down while scrolling

Post by Pepe Parisien » Sat Oct 04, 2014 10:32 am

Good morning

I have a 788CI HD unit. Current issue has developed, in that whenever I cycle thru the view screens, as soon as I get to the gps mapping screen and zoom in or out, the unit powers down.

Other screens perform fine. At some stages during it's power down phase, a "dos type" screen appears with menu functions such as keyboard check, reset and a few other options. I tried a few of them, but it appears to put the unit into a loop until I disconnect power and restart the process again.

It appears to be only affecting this unit (998C SI unit performs fine with no issues).

Aside from sending to Humminbird for diagnosis (no warranty), any ideas on what I may be able to trouble shoot?

Thanks

Pepe

Possible power issue.

Remove the display from the mount.
Locate the power cord plug in the cable collector.
Use a pencil and adjust the two plug pins in any direction--VERY SLIGHTY and GENTLY
The pins still have to line up with the little holes in the display receptacle --- LOOK AT THEM
Replace the display on the mount.

Thanks, Wayne

However, I don't believe it's a power cable issue - I've done crossovers with other power supplies with no issues. The problem is somehow connected with the GPS portion of the unit (software related somehow).

Are you running the latest version software in the 788ci HD unit Pepe?
Are you running a memory or mapping card in the unit? If so, try it without the card installed and see if the same thing happens or not.

Hi Greg

Yes, I have tried all your suggestions prior, as well as verifiying with Humminbird site that I am running current software (6.3).

Update - I ended up sending my unit in for repair/diagonsis at the Canadian Humminbird repair centre. They were successful in solving the issue.

Issued ended up being corrupt waypoints - they ended up installing newest software on unit and formatted the Nav Directory, and all was good. Unfortunately, when they tried to clean up the waypoints, the file was too badly corrupted to load.

Overall, extremely pleased with the service and result.
