Connecting 858c HD DI and Terrova US2 ?

Post by fabb600 » Wed Jun 12, 2013 8:13 pm

I have a new Terrova with US2 and a new 858c HD DI. Can I connect my US2 transducer to my 858c HD DI unit along with the DI transducer using the transducer Y-adapter cable? And then switch back and forth via the menu on the 858 unit?

I also noticed in another thread that someone said that I can destroy my 858c DI if I connect it to a US2 transducer - I've never heard of such a issue. Is that really possible?

I still have a 788c unit as well so I could always use that to display the US2 and leave the 858c for just the rear DI transducer if that makes more sense.

Yes you can connect the US2 and the DI transducer via an AS-Si-DB-Y cable but you would need to change the Connected Transducer menu (also called “Transducer Select”) to the DI 200/83” setting as the US2 transducer uses these frequencies. This would have the 858c HD DI unit using the DI sonar from the DI transducer and the 2D sonar from the US2 transducers. There would be no switching involved here.

You could also select to have the 858c HD DI unit use the 2D sonar from the US2 to determine the water depth if you want (the default is to use the DI sonar for this) but it should not work any better than what it does now.

Yes, if you only connected the US2 transducer to your 858c HD DI unit it could cause internal damage to it. This is because the DI sonar beams will not have an electrical load on them which may cause them to fail.

Greg, I'm kind of jumping in here but I just bought a 858c HD DI and was planning on putting it on my boat in place of my 788c. If I use the existing glassed in transducer am I likely to cause damage to the 858, or do I just need to select the correct transducer setting in the menus?

On the 858c HD DI unit you have additional transducers that you can select that will allow it to work on a DualBeam transducer without damaging the unit. You would have to select the “Dual Beam” setting in the Connected Transducer menu. This will only allow the 858c HD DI to use the 83/200kHz 2D sonar (no DI sonar). To use the DI sonar you will have to have it connected to a DI transducer whether that is only the DI transducer or the DI transducer with the US2 transducer (would require the AS-Si-DB-Y cable and the menu change I mentioned in my previous post).
